There are several ways to create objects such as a fence, grate or a cage in 3DS Max. When geometry is required nothing beats the lattice modifier in ease and speed.  This modifier takes the segments or edges of a polygon and converts them into solid geometry.

Simply create a box or plane object.

Make any changes you want the geometry, I simply detached some polygons and made a gate.

Simply add the lattice modifier to each object and adjust the struts and joint settings.

You now have a quick easy cage or gate and took only a few minutes.
