A fast easy way to select a ring of edges or polygons is through the use of the ring and loop tools under the Selection Rollout in Editable Poly.

1. Simply select your edge and click the Ring Button.

2. All the edges that are parallel to the edge you have selected are highlighted.

3. Simply hold down Ctrl and choose another sub object such as polygon or vertices and you have a quick selection of multiple sub object elements.

This is a fast and easy way to select a ring of edges or polygons.
