Smoothing Groups Print
Written by Joe

Ever wonder how those low poly items can look so good? One of the techniques to help reduce the look of hard, or faceted edges on a low poly item such as a game character is with the use of smoothing groups. Smoothing groups look at the value assigned to adjacent polygons, if the value is the same, the edge is smoothed, if different, the edge is left faceted.

If we take a look at this Nissan 350-Z, we can clearly see the hard or faceted edges.
No value is assigned, so we have faceted edges

Select the polygons that you would like to have smooth edges.
select the polygons we want to smooth

Under the Polygons Properties rollout, assign a value to the selected polygons to smooth their edges.
assign a value

You now have relatively smooth edges verses the previously faceted edges prior to assigning a value.
You now have smoothed edges
